Tertiary Positive Behavioral Support- (Intensive Need)
Tertiary support is for those students who fail to respond to universal
and secondary support. These are the students who need intensive
support in order to be successful. Functional Behavior Assessment
is most likely in order to determine the function behind the behavior
prior to jumping in with interventions. Please check out the page
on Functional Behavior Assessments for more information on this topic.
Use your SWIS data and run an individual student data report on any
student who is earning frequent flyer miles to the administrative
office or any student whose behavior is impeding the learning of
others in the classroom. Schools can determine who these students
are using either SWIS data or by doing a universal screening.
Develop a behavior support team (BST) to look at data and determine
the following:
Student Strengths- What can you build on?
Student Needs- What can you provide?
Settings and situations that might require intervention?
What data you will collect and how you will collect it?
How long you will collect data? (How much do you need?)
When you will meet again to determine the results of the data collection?
Once this is in place and completed you can fill out a competing pathway
chart to develop an effective intervention plan based on the function
of behavior rather than our reaction to the behavior.
